U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, AL-07, on Tuesday voted against House Republicans’ budget plan. “The proposal calls for historic cuts to health care while paving the way for $2 trillion in tax cuts for billionaires and big corporations,” Sewell’s release stated.
“To rip health care away from millions of Americans in order to give tax cuts to the very wealthy is unconscionable,” said Rep. Sewell. “The people we represent sent us to Congress to improve their lives, not pad the pockets of Trump, Musk, and their billionaire friends. This budget is a betrayal of Alabama families, and I voted hell no!”
House Republicans’ budget calls for $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid, which could threaten more than one million Alabamians and the health care providers that serve them.
More than 20 percent of all Alabamians rely on Medicaid, including:
- 45.4 percent of all children
- 45 percent of moms giving birth and their newborn babies
- 35.2 percent of working-age adults with disabilities
- 68 percent of people living in nursing homes
- 20 percent of Medicare beneficiaries
- 12.7 percent of adults aged 19-64
Cuts to Medicaid can also devastate Alabama’s hospitals, community health centers, nursing homes, and home health providers.
