ALDOT warns of “unpaid toll” text scam

ALDOT warned citizens about a new text scam claiming unpaid toll fees.

Citizens across Alabama have recently received texts claiming they owe unpaid toll fees, with the message telling recipients that it comes from the Alabama Department of Transportation.

But ALDOT is wanting citizens that the messages are the latest version of a scam hoping to trick people into sending money or surrendering their personal information.

“The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is aware of an ongoing scam that is being relayed over text messages,” ALDOT said in a release Wednesday. “Anything you receive claiming to be a toll collection effort from ALDOT is a scam. The text message, which was not sent by ALDOT, may claim you are subject to legal action if you do not pay outstanding toll fees.”

According to the FTC, following a link could lead to a phishing attack in which the scammer tries to take your personal information, credit card information, or more.

ALDOT is encouraging people who receive the text message to not click the link and report it as spam to their cellular provider, and to warn family and friends so that they too are aware of the scam.
