U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, AL-07, announced Monday that she will bring Ms. Chelsy Lyons, Division 3 vice president and legislative political coordinator for the American Federation of Government Employees Local 2206, District 5, as her guest to President Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday evening.
“The nearly 10,000 federal employees in my district work hard every day to deliver the services that our communities rely on,” said Rep. Sewell. “The way they have been treated by this administration is nothing short of disgraceful. Trump’s attacks on our federal workforce are not only a slap in the face to our hard-working civil servants, but they are a direct threat to programs like Social Security which are a lifeline for so many Alabamians.”
“I’m looking forward to bringing Chelsy Lyons as my guest to the President’s address,” continued Sewell. “Throughout her more than 17 years with AFGE, she has fought tirelessly to ensure that our federal workers are treated fairly and with dignity. Rest assured; Alabama’s federal workers will be well-represented on Tuesday night.”
“I am greatly honored for the opportunity to join with such a fervent, diligent, and devoted leader, Congresswoman Terri Sewell,” said Ms. Lyons. “Representative Sewell is one of my greatest inspirations and role models. She has broken glass ceilings and has left trails of greatness for us to follow. Her work in the State of Alabama is undeniable and extraordinary; she is necessary. She is a force to be reckoned with and I consider it an immeasurable privilege to work beside such an honorable legend.”
Ms. Lyons began her federal career in 2008, as a claims authorizer for the U.S. Social Security Administration where she has continued to serve for the past 17 years. On her first day of orientation, she joined AFGE after witnessing the powerful zeal, essence of strength, and display of unity of its members.
AFGE is the largest federal employee union, representing 800,000 workers in the federal government and the government of the District of Columbia. AFGE represents almost every type of federal employee with its highest membership from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Social Security Administration, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Homeland Security.
Alabama is home to roughly 41,000 federal employees, including nearly 10,000 in the 7th Congressional District (excluding uniformed military personnel and federal contractors).
