Troy University has unveiled an elite honors program aimed at fostering academic excellence, global engagement and leadership among its top scholars.
Evolving from the existing Global Scholars Program, the University Honors Global Scholars Program is a new program designed to challenge the best of the best through specialized coursework and a study abroad research project. This new initiative falls under the broader framework of the University Honors Program.
Under the leadership of Dr. Priya Menon, the goal of the UHGSP is to elevate academic excellence.
“Our mission is to cultivate a cohort of academically exceptional, culturally curious and highly-motived scholars who demonstrate a passion for intellectual growth, innovation, exemplary leadership and a commitment to community service,” she said. “We want to coach the best that come to us, and we are going to be very rigorous in this program.”
Through leadership development, community engagement, international study opportunities, peer mentorship, an advanced honors curriculum and specialized coursework, students gain the skills and perspective needed to succeed in graduate studies, professional careers and beyond.
“TROY currently doesn’t have a program like this that can speak to our academic reputation—the goal of this program is to change that,” Menon said. “We want to help our students compete for merit awards, to get their papers published in academic journals, to get internships and collaborations abroad. We have the students, and now we get to offer them the best we have in a new and exciting way. We want to make sure their relationship to TROY doesn’t end when they graduate.”
Additional benefits of the University Honors Global Scholars Program include small class sizes, graduation distinctions, membership to the University Honors Alliance, publication and showcase opportunities, special events and networking, early registration and more.
Admission to the University Honors Global Scholars Program is by invitation only and primarily offered at the time of acceptance to TROY. The selection process includes a comprehensive evaluation of the UHGSP application including a personal statement, a resume highlighting academic and extracurricular achievements and a letter of recommendation from an academic professional. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to participate in an interview.
Students can enter the University Honors Global Scholars Program through one of five ways: Scholar Plus Award recipient, Scholar Award recipient, Chancellor’s Award recipient, nominated students and transfer students.
To successfully complete the program, students must: maintain a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA, complete a study abroad research project and present their research in addition to an Honors CORE, which is a capstone project or thesis.
“While our honors students are going to be Global Scholars and will travel out to the world, we also want the world to come to TROY. We want our students to be exposed to the globe, take that leap, then come back and do great things at TROY,” Menon said.
