Attorney John Russell announced Wednesday that he will run for the district judge seat in Pickens County as a Republican. The primary elections are scheduled for May 26, 2026.

“I would be honored to serve as the next District Judge of Pickens County,” Russell said. “I have lived in Pickens County all my life, practiced law for more than 20 years and have the experience needed to serve in this position. I am ready to take that experience and put it to work for the citizens of Pickens County in a fair and unbiased manner.”

Russell, a native of Pickens County, has deep roots in the community and the county bar. The Russell family has had a presence in the law community for over 40 years.  His father, John Russell III, opened a law practice in Aliceville in 1978, and Russell joined the practice with his father in 2004. Both Russells have served this community in all courts the Pickens County District Judge presides over.

“Russell has also gained practical experience as the City Prosecutor and Attorney for the City of Aliceville. His firm has served in this position for over 35 years. This experience and insight gives Russell the knowledge needed to effectively carry out the position,” the press release stated.

He graduated from the University of Alabama in 2000, with a degree in business management and earned his law degree from the Thomas Goode Jones School of Law in 2004. He is married to Kelly Mayfield Russell and has three boys, Rainer, Reece and Walt. He is an active member and Deacon for Aliceville First Baptist Church.
