Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles Director Cam Ward Wednesday joined Governor Kay Ivey, Alabama House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter, State Senate President Pro-Tem Garlan Gudger, sheriffs, police officers and state law enforcement leaders from across the state to introduce the SAFE ALABAMA Public Safety Package.

The legislative package has bipartisan support and features bills targeting inner-city gun violence. Several of the bills will rely on the work of ABPP, including a measure calling for enhanced supervision of violent, high-risk juvenile offenders. Additionally, the package expands Aniah’s Law and builds on the actions of the metro area crime suppression unit – a multifaceted law enforcement operation that includes ABPP and agencies from local, state and county offices. More information can be found here.

ABPP Director Cam Ward released the following statement:

“A safer Alabama is a stronger Alabama, and we are ready to continue doing our job — from enhanced supervision and electronic monitoring to reentry and support — to meet these challenges head-on. The SAFE Alabama Public Safety Package is mission-critical to not only the safety of our citizens but to the overall growth and prosperity of our state. We’re proud to be a part of this collective state and local law enforcement operation. Thank you to Governor Kay Ivey, Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter, State Sen. Pro-Tem Garlan Gudger and all of our elected leaders for backing the blue and protecting communities across Alabama.”

“The Bureau is dedicated to promoting and enhancing public safety through cooperation and collaboration with the Legislature, the Courts, criminal justice agencies, victims and the community by providing investigation, supervision, and surveillance services in addition to a holistic approach to rehabilitating offenders,” the press release stated. Active APOSTC certified officers comprise the majority of ABPP personnel.
