Senate President Pro Tem Garlan Gudger, R – Cullman, announced on Tuesday that he has hired Ashley McLain, a veteran education advocate and public policy professional with 23 years of experience, to serve in his office as deputy chief of staff for policy and budgets.
McLain most recently served as the governmental affairs director of the School Superintendents of Alabama, an association dedicated to improving public education and promoting the positions of local school leaders from across the state.
“Ashley McLain’s years of experience and first-hand knowledge provide her with the tools necessary to handle difficult public policy issues and navigate complex budget matters,” Gudger said. “She will track bills and measures as they work their way through the legislative process and keep me informed of changes, amendments, and any hiccups or developments that may occur along the way.”
McLain said she looks forward to working with Gudger as he begins his pro tem tenure and hopes her work will help bring a new layer of transparency and openness to the Senate’s legislative process.
“Sen. Gudger made it clear that he wants to provide members with quick, accurate, and thorough answers to the policy questions they might ask, and that requires our office to closely track and monitor legislation and budgets that are on the move,” McLain said. “It will be a bit like managing several different trains traveling down parallel and criss-crossing tracks, but I am confident that our work will help the Senate operate more efficiently, effectively, and transparently.”
A graduate of Auburn University Montgomery, McLain will assume her new job in the Office of the Senate President Pro Tempore starting immediately.
