After Gov. Kay Ivey addressed lawmakers on Tuesday night, the Alabama House Democratic Caucus spoke about their upcoming legislative goals compared to Ivey’s.
Rep. Ontario Tillman, D-Bessemer, delivered the rebuttal to the State of the State and detailed some concerns that the caucus had heard from constituents since May.
”Since the conclusion of our last legislative session, my colleagues and I have spent an enormous amount of time and energy on having direct, frank discussions with the people and families in our local communities to ensure that the legislation and public policy we support addresses their needs, their concerns, and their collective well being,” said Tillman.
The platform, “Forward for Freedom,” is focused on protecting and expanding freedoms for Alabamians.
“We ask you to join us in our march forward because our freedom is not behind us, it lies ahead of us, and we must march forward towards it. When we march forward for freedom, each stride brings us closer to fulfilling the promise of our democracy as we make deliberate strides to create a more perfect union by expanding opportunity and supporting growth,” said Tillman.
Central to the proposed agenda is an emphasis on creating an environment that further provides for innovation and supports the entrepreneurial spirit in Alabama.
“We must move forward to build an economic environment that works for hardworking people in Alabama. Promoting jobs, raising wages, and investing in critical services are the foundation of a thriving economy,” said Tillman.
The Alabama legislature has also set its sights on expanding access to affordable, high-quality healthcare. Addressing the state’s healthcare disparities, the Alabama House Democratic Caucus is pushing for the closure of coverage gaps, the prevention of hospital closures and an increase in investments in emergency services.
“We believe every Alabamian deserves access to the healthcare they need to live healthy, productive lives,” said Tillman.
Education is a mainstay on the agenda, with a focus on improving public education, raising teacher salaries and expanding support for students and educators alike. This includes increased pay for teachers, stipends for student teachers and additional resources for classrooms to ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed. There is also a push to expand career and technical training programs to provide students with real-world skills and pathways to successful careers.
Another aspect of the agenda is ensuring that every Alabamian’s right to vote is protected. Lawmakers from the caucus are pledging to support efforts that make voting more accessible and secure, while also fighting against voter suppression and efforts to undermine election integrity.
“We stand firmly against voter suppression and will work to protect fair and secure elections. Every citizen deserves to have their voice heard,” said Tillman.
In response to the ongoing concerns around gun violence, the legislature has proposed common-sense gun safety reforms aimed at protecting children, families and communities from harm. These measures include support for laws that balance Second Amendment rights with the need for stronger safeguards, such as preventing concealed carry for non-law enforcement individuals.
Reforming Alabama’s criminal justice system is also a priority. This includes addressing the state’s overcrowded prison system and reforming parole processes.
The caucus has also proposed bold stances on social justice issues, including supporting the repeal of the state’s controversial abortion ban, which currently does not allow exceptions for rape or incest. Legislators advocate for returning the power of personal family planning decisions to individuals, not the state.
Additionally, these lawmakers are calling to decriminalize recreational marijuana and streamline the state’s medical marijuana licensing process. Their agenda also includes a call to reverse Alabama’s ban on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, advocating for systemic change and equality.
In closing, Tillman emphasized that Alabama cannot afford to remain stagnant. He recognized that the state’s challenges will not resolve themselves and that it is time for bold action and commitment to a shared vision of progress.
“As we begin this legislative session, we are committed to working across party lines to find common ground. Together, we can build an Alabama where every citizen has the opportunity to live freely, prosper, and succeed,” concluded Tillman.
