Governor Ivey’s endorsement of paid parental leave marks a significant shift in state policy, reinforcing Alabama’s commitment to supporting strong, growing families and recognizing the invaluable role of educators. The AEA emphasized that “ensuring educators have the opportunity to care for and bond with their children without the fear of financial hardship is not just the right thing to do—it’s an investment in the long-term success of our schools and communities.”

The association expressed its eagerness to collaborate with Governor Ivey and legislative leaders to ensure the successful implementation of paid parental leave, calling it a major step in prioritizing the well-being of those who dedicate their lives to serving Alabama’s children.

“AEA looks forward to working with Governor Ivey and legislative leaders to ensure the successful implementation of paid parental leave for Alabama’s hardworking education professionals and state employees,” the statement read. “We thank the Governor for her leadership on this issue and for prioritizing the well-being of those who dedicate their lives to serving Alabama’s children.”

Governor Ivey’s State of the State address also outlined her broader priorities for the 2025 Legislative Session, including education reform, infrastructure investments, and public safety initiatives. She is expected to propose a package of bills focusing on supporting law enforcement and addressing crime across the state.
