As the 2025 Legislative Session begins, the Alabama Republican Party has unveiled its agenda, prioritizing economic growth, individual freedoms, election security, community safety, and what it calls “family values.” This year’s priorities include tax cuts for Alabama families, expanded parental rights, and measures to counter what the party describes as “woke policies” that threaten the American Dream. The GOP’s leadership says it remains steadfast in resisting government overreach and ensuring that Alabama remains a stronghold for conservative governance.
Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl emphasized the party’s objectives for the session. “The Alabama Republican Party firmly believes that government’s first priority should be serving the people it represents. We are committed to supporting policies that help those in need, safeguard American values, and defend the fundamental rights of each and every single individual,” Wahl said. “As we look ahead to this legislative session, our goal is to build on the foundation laid by the State Legislature in recent years—work that has protected children from radical woke policies, provided financial relief to struggling families by cutting the grocery tax, and defended constitutional freedoms. The Alabama Republican Party will not back down and we will not surrender as we fight for good government.”
He continued, “The Republican Party wants to see Alabama leading the nation in common sense policies that defend the people and their fundamental rights. It’s time to put people first again. That’s our goal this legislative session.”
The party’s agenda includes a range of proposals spanning tax policy, education, public safety, and social issues. Republican leaders are pushing to eliminate Alabama’s business personal property tax, introduce free-market standards for cryptocurrency, and begin phasing out the state income tax. The GOP argues that cutting taxes and reducing regulations will strengthen Alabama’s economy and benefit middle-class and low-income families.
A central theme of the party’s platform is what it calls the protection of children from “radical political ideologies” and inappropriate content in schools. The legislative agenda includes banning “transgender indoctrination” in public schools, ensuring female-only access to bathrooms and locker rooms, granting parents full control over their children’s participation in sex education, and preventing teachers from being required to use gender pronouns.
While immigration enforcement is primarily a federal responsibility, Alabama Republicans argue that state-level action is necessary. Their proposed measures include identifying and deporting undocumented immigrants with criminal records, cracking down on human trafficking, and increasing funding for district attorney offices to combat crime.
GOP leaders are advocating for additional protections against government overreach. Key proposals include expanding medical treatment options through “Right to Try 2.0” legislation, banning red-flag laws that allow courts to temporarily remove firearms from individuals deemed a threat, prohibiting restrictions on cash transactions, and strengthening protections for religious liberty.
Alabama Republicans continue to prioritize election security, despite a lack of evidence of widespread voter fraud in the state. Their proposed reforms include implementing hand-count audits after elections, reforming the absentee voting process, and requiring party registration for primary elections.
In line with their emphasis on “family values,” the GOP is backing policies designed to support mothers and children, including raising the age of medical consent, increasing transparency in the Department of Human Resources, and providing tax-credit status for pregnancy resource centers.
Republican leaders are positioning themselves against what they describe as extreme left-wing ideology, with initiatives such as defining “womanhood” under state law and ensuring gender-segregated spaces, preventing financial institutions from “debanking” individuals based on religious or political beliefs, banning taxpayer funding for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, and recognizing gold and silver as legal currency in Alabama.
With a Republican supermajority in the Alabama Legislature, many of these proposals are likely to move forward, though some—particularly those related to economic policy and election reform—could face opposition from Democrats and advocacy groups. The session begins Tuesday, setting the stage for what is expected to be another year of politically charged debates in Montgomery.
