U.S. Representative Robert B. Aderholt, R-Haleyville, introduced a bill Wednesday that would prohibit federal tax dollars from going to fund Planned Parenthood and its affiliates.

Aderholt wrote in his announcement of the bill, entitled the Protect Funding for Women’s Health Care Act, “Defending the unborn has been a top priority of mine since I was first elected to Congress, and I will continue to fight for life each and every day.”

I am proud to introduce this bill in the U.S. House and to continue standing for life by ensuring that federal tax dollars are never used to fund organizations such as Planned Parenthood and others like it,” Aderholt continued.

In a post on X announcing the bill’s filing, Aderholt wrote, “I’ve introduced the Protecting Funding for Women’s Health Care Act to ensure federal funds support comprehensive, life-affirming care—not abortion providers. Women deserve real health care options that protect both mother and child.”

The Protect Funding for Women’s Health Care Act was originally introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives by Aderholt in November 2023. The bill was introduced as companion legislation to a Senate bill sponsored by U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, seeking to prohibit federal funding for Planned Parenthood.

Ernst also announced her refiling of the Protect Funding for Women’s Health Care Act in the Senate on Wednesday, alongside the Ensuring Accurate and Complete Abortion Data Reporting Act, which would require states to report the number of abortions conducted by Centers for Disease Control.

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America vice president of government affairs, Judge Marilyn Musgrave, wrote on Aderholt’s announcement, “As chair of the House Values Action team, Representative Aderholt is a steadfast leader for Life. The Protect Funding for Women’s Health Care Act safeguards unborn children and their mothers by preventing federal tax dollars from bankrolling Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion chain.”

“True health care and services for women rather than the violence of abortion. Thank you, Rep. Aderholt, for your work to end taxpayer funding of abortion businesses,” Musgrave continued.

While Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in the U.S., the organization also provides a number of other reproductive health services including, birth control, cancer screenings and sexually transmitted infection screenings and treatment.

Planned Parenthood operates only one clinic in Alabama, located in Birmingham.

The Commonwealth Fund found in 2024, Alabama ranked 46th in quality of women’s health and reproductive care outcomes out of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Alabama also had the 48th lowest infant mortality rate in the nation and the 39th lowest maternal mortality rate.
