The Alabama Republican Party has announced that State Representative Matt Woods, R-Walker County, will be its nominee for the upcoming special election in Alabama Senate District 5. Woods was the sole candidate to qualify before the deadline on January 7, 2025.
“We are excited to have Representative Matt Woods as our nominee for Senate District 5,” stated Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl. “He is a solid conservative who has consistently worked to protect Alabama families and uphold the values we cherish. Representative Woods has been a champion of transparency and accountability, serving as a House sponsor of the Curriculum Transparency Act passed in the last legislative session.”
Chairman Wahl further expressed the party’s full support for Woods in the forthcoming election stating “The Alabama Republican Party will provide Rep. Woods with any resources he needs to ensure we hold this important Senate seat. I am confident his strong conservative record and dedication to his constituents will resonate with voters in Senate District 5.”
Representative Woods was first elected to the Alabama House of Representatives on Nov. 8, 2022. During his tenure, he has served on the House Education Policy, Rules, and Rural and Urban Development Committees, working to improve the lives of families in his district and across the state.
The Senate District 5 seat became vacant following the resignation of former Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Reed, who accepted a position in Governor Kay Ivey’s cabinet as Senior Advisor to Workforce Transformation.
Senate District 5 encompasses Walker, Fayette, and Lamar Counties, along with portions of Jefferson and Tuscaloosa Counties. Governor Ivey has scheduled the special primary election for Tuesday, March 11, 2025, with a runoff, if necessary, on April 8, and the special general election on June 24.
