On January 6, 2025, U.S. Representative Terri Sewell, D-AL, released a statement reflecting on the fourth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. She recounted the “feeling of terror and the thunderous sound of the mob” as she and her colleagues were trapped in the House Gallery during the insurrection. Sewell emphasized the importance of remembering the events of that day and paying tribute to the more than 140 law enforcement officers who were injured, as well as honoring those who lost their lives defending democratic ideals.

In her statement, Sewell underscored the sanctity of elections and the necessity for elected leaders to remain loyal to the Constitution rather than to any individual or party. She highlighted the peaceful certification of the 2024 presidential election results as a contrast to the events of four years prior, noting that this act upheld the will of the American people.

Sewell, who has served Alabama’s 7th Congressional District since 2011, has been an advocate for voting rights and has consistently called for accountability in the aftermath of the January 6 attack. She has previously stated, “As we move forward, we must remember that there can be no healing without accountability.”

The January 6, 2021, attack resulted in significant damage to the Capitol and a profound impact on those present. Sewell has been vocal about her experiences during the attack and has participated in legislative efforts to address the security failures that occurred. In May 2021, she voted to pass the Emergency Security Supplemental to Respond to January 6th Appropriations Act, which provided $1.9 billion to secure the safety of the Capitol and support law enforcement.

As the nation continues to reflect on the events of January 6, Sewell’s statements serve as a reminder of the fragility of democracy and the ongoing need to protect and uphold constitutional principles.
