Irondale Police Lieutenant Mark Meadows, a 30-year veteran of the force, was fatally struck by a vehicle while directing traffic near the Church of the Highlands in Irondale, Alabama, on Monday morning.
The incident occurred around 7 a.m. at the intersection of Grants Mill Road and Overton Road, where Lt. Meadows was setting up traffic cones to manage the flow of vehicles. A 32-year-old driver of a pickup truck struck Lt. Meadows; the driver remained at the scene as authorities arrived. Lt. Meadows was transported to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is currently investigating the incident, and it is unclear whether any charges will be filed against the driver.
Lt. Meadows, 60, dedicated over three decades to the Irondale Police Department, earning recognition as a committed law enforcement professional who prioritized the safety and well-being of his community. In addition to his police service, he was a U.S. Army veteran, having served four years in the 3rd Ranger Battalion and the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was also an FBI-certified instructor in pistol and rifle since 2001 and an NRA-certified pistol instructor since 2017.
Irondale Mayor James D. Stewart Jr. expressed his condolences, stating, “Lt. Mark Meadows was a treasured member of our Irondale family for over 30 years. He was a man of few words but always led by example and embodied the heart of a true public servant.”
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall also released a statement, saying, “Tonight, my heart goes out to the family of Lieutenant Mark Meadows of Irondale Police Department, his colleagues, and the entire Irondale community… He faithfully served his country, state, and city and we all owe him and his family our gratitude.”
The Irondale community mourns the loss of Lt. Meadows, remembering him as a dedicated officer, veteran, and instructor who made significant contributions to public safety and law enforcement training.
