In the wake of the tragic terrorist attack in New Orleans on January 1, 2025, which claimed 14 lives and injured 35 others, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has joined Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry in declaring periods of mourning to honor the victims. Among those killed were Kareem Badawi and Drew Dauphin, both Alabama residents.

Governor Ivey has called upon Alabamians to observe a day of mourning for Kareem Badawi on Monday, January 6, and for Drew Dauphin on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. She has directed that flags across the state remain at half-staff during this time.

The attack was perpetrated by Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. Army veteran from Texas, who drove a rented pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. After crashing the vehicle, Jabbar exited and engaged in a shootout with police before being fatally shot. An ISIS flag was found in his truck, and he had posted videos expressing support for the terrorist group prior to the attack.

Authorities are investigating Jabbar’s background, including his travels to Egypt and possible connections to ISIS. The FBI is leading the investigation, treating the incident as an act of terrorism.

In response to the tragedy, Governor Landry has declared a period of mourning in Louisiana, ordering flags over state buildings to be flown at half-staff on designated days to honor each victim.

The New Orleans community has come together to support the victims’ families, holding vigils and memorial services. Local and federal authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, seeking to understand the motivations behind it and to prevent future incidents.
