Alabama Speaker of the House Nathaniel Ledbetter was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Jacksonville State University during its fall commencement ceremony on December 13, 2024, at Pete Mathews Coliseum. This story was first reported by Jacksonville State University.
Speaker Ledbetter, who also served as the keynote speaker for Jax State’s 10 a.m. commencement, received the honorary degree for his leadership in public service and his lasting contributions to Alabama. The presentation was made by Jax State President Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr., and Board of Trustees Chairman Randy Jones before a crowd of graduates, faculty, and guests.
The resolution outlining the honor praised Speaker Ledbetter’s distinguished career, which began in the electrical cooperative industry and evolved into a prominent role in state leadership. A native of Rainsville, Alabama, Ledbetter built a career centered on infrastructure and local governance before his election to the Alabama House of Representatives in 2014. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming majority leader in 2017 and being unanimously elected Speaker in 2022.
Under his leadership, the Alabama Legislature has secured landmark achievements, including mental health care reforms, tax cuts, and economic development initiatives. Notably, Ledbetter has been recognized for advancing education and fostering community growth statewide.
Jacksonville State University congratulated the Class of 2024, celebrating their achievements and reaffirming its mission to honor leaders who exemplify service and excellence.
