Alabama officially cast its nine electoral votes for President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance Tuesday during a ceremony at the Old State Capitol.

Trump comfortably defeated Democrat nominee Kamala Harris in the deep red state when voters took to the polls in November.

Alabama’s nine appointed electors came together Tuesday to cast those votes officially. The electors were Ag Commissioner Rick Pate, State Sen. Lance Bell, Chris Brown, RNC Alabama Committeeman Bill Harris Jr., Bonnie Sachs, Renee Gentle Powers, Mike Haynes, James C. Haynes Jr. and Jacqueline Getson.

Gov. Kay Ivey praised the importance of the official act and took a moment to defend the electoral college system.

“Now there’s some in our country who would seek to abolish the electoral college, and undermine the votes of states like ours,” Ivey said. “But I say the Electoral College is vital to protecting the character of our nation.”

The votes will now be sent to be certified in Congress on Jan. 6.
