This week, a segment of Alabama State Route 181 will be officially designated as the “Representative Joe Faust Highway,” honoring the extensive public service of former Alabama House Representative Joe Faust. The designated stretch extends from State Route 104 to County Road 32.
Born on September 13, 1940, in Birmingham, Alabama, Teddy Joe Faust, Sr. relocated to Fairhope in 1942. He graduated from the Marietta Johnson School of Organic Education in 1959, and attended Faulkner State Community College in 1968. Faust served in the Alabama National Guard from 1958 to 1966, including active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1962.
Faust’s political career began with his election to the Baldwin County Commission in 1996, where he served two terms. In 2002, he was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives for District 94, a position he held until 2022. During his tenure, Faust was instrumental in expanding Alabama Highway 181, implementing property tax freezes for long-term senior residents, and securing significant funding for local schools, economic development, and historic sites such as Fort Morgan, Blakeley State Park, and Bicentennial Park.
Beyond his legislative work, Faust was a board member of the Baldwin County Economic Development Alliance, the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, and the Marietta Johnson School of Organic Education. He also founded Clean Water Alabama, an organization dedicated to promoting water conservation and education.
In recognition of his 26 years of public service, the Baldwin County Commission honored Faust in October 2022. Commissioner Charles Gruber remarked, “Your office was always open… No matter what time it was, people were able to call you and you would be able to help them.”
The road-naming ceremony is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Fairhope Satellite Courthouse in the Baldwin County Commission Chambers. Representative Jennifer Fidler, who succeeded Faust, stated, “We are proud that we are able to honor him and his dedication to our county in this manner.”
This dedication serves as a lasting tribute to Joe Faust’s enduring commitment to Baldwin County and the state of Alabama.
