Woodfin appoints Drs. Andre McShan, Monique Gardner Witherspoon to Water Works Board

Their terms will officially begin on January 1.

Birmingham Mayor Randall L. Woodfin has announced the appointment of Dr. Andre McShan and Dr. Monique Gardner Witherspoon to the Birmingham Water Works Board. Their terms will officially begin on January 1.

“The Birmingham Water Works Board performs a major role in the oversight of the utility for our residents,” Mayor Woodfin said. “Drs. McShan and Gardner Witherspoon are committed leaders in our community with a proven record of cultivating and nurturing relationships for the greater good.”

Dr. Monique Gardner Witherspoon brings extensive experience in education and public policy to her new role. She is currently an associate dean and associate professor in the Orlean Beeson School of Education at Samford University. With a doctorate in educational leadership, public policy, and administration, as well as a juris doctorate, Dr. Gardner Witherspoon has held various senior leadership positions, including serving as the president and CEO of a nonprofit organization and as a regional superintendent in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Dr. Gardner Witherspoon is an active member of several community, state, and national boards. She has also been recognized with numerous awards for her leadership and contributions to public policy.

Dr. Andre McShan, a Birmingham native and graduate of Ramsay High School, is an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He serves as the medical director of The Workplace at UAB Highlands and co-medical director of UAB Employee Health. Dr. McShan is board-certified in occupational and environmental medicine, focusing on promoting healthy workers, safe workplaces, and thriving environments.

Dr. McShan earned his undergraduate degree in biology from Morehouse College and later obtained his MD and MSPH degrees from Meharry Medical College. He is actively involved in various professional and civic organizations, including serving as a board member for the A.G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club, The American Heart Association Southeast, Jefferson County Medical Society, and Kiwanis Club of Birmingham. He is also a graduate of Leadership Birmingham.

The appointments of Dr. McShan and Dr. Gardner Witherspoon underscore Mayor Woodfin’s commitment to strengthening the leadership of the Birmingham Water Works Board. Both appointees bring a wealth of experience and dedication to serving the Birmingham community.
