Kelly Butler, former Alabama Finance Director has passed away

In June 2021, Butler retired due to complications from what was believed to be Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Kelly Butler, former Alabama State Finance Director and a dedicated public servant for over 36 years, has passed away after his courageous battle with ALS. Butler’s career and life reflected an unwavering commitment to the state of Alabama and its people.

Governor Kay Ivey expressed her sorrow and admiration for Butler’s legacy: “It is with profound sadness I share the news that former State Finance Director Kelly Butler has passed away after his valiant fight against ALS. Kelly was the epitome of a public servant and a good man. For those who knew Kelly, you know this about him. For those Alabamians who did not have a chance to personally know Kelly, you can be assured he likely touched your life in some way. Even after his ALS diagnosis and following his retirement, he worked and gave back to our state. Truly, Kelly was a champion in his service as finance director, and to the end, he was a champion for life itself!

Butler began his public service career as an examiner with the Alabama Department of Revenue, later spending 19 years with the Legislative Fiscal Office. He also served as Assistant Finance Director for Fiscal Operations and as State Budget Officer, gaining respect for his financial acumen and dedication. Appointed by Governor Ivey as State Finance Director in 2018, Butler described the role as a career highlight: “Throughout my career, I have been so incredibly fortunate to work with many great people on behalf of our wonderful state. Serving as Governor Ivey’s Finance Director has been the honor of a lifetime.”

In June 2021, Butler retired due to complications from what was believed to be Lou Gehrig’s disease. Even in retirement, Butler remained a committed servant to the state. In 2023, he was honored with the dedication of the Kelly Butler Parking Deck, a project he initiated to improve parking access in the Capitol complex.

Butler’s enduring legacy lies in his devotion to Alabama and its citizens. His life and career exemplify the highest standards of public service. He is survived by his beloved wife, Beverly, and their family, who remain in the thoughts and prayers of all who knew him.

Kelly Butler’s passing marks the end of an era of steadfast and compassionate leadership in Alabama. May his memory serve as a beacon of dedication and integrity for generations to come.
