Governor Kay Ivey has directed that all flags be flown at half-staff within the State Capitol complex in Montgomery and throughout Alabama’s State Senate District 31 starting at 5 p.m. today, Thursday, November 7, through sundown tomorrow, Friday, November 8, 2024. This tribute honors the life and service of former State Senator Jimmy Holley of Elba, who passed away on Monday at the age of 80.
Reflecting on Holley’s legacy, Governor Ivey said, “Senator Jimmy Holley’s remarkable 44 years of combined legislative service not only ensured he was a strong and effective representative for his constituents in Coffee, Covington, Dale, and Pike counties, but also enabled him to accumulate a vast knowledge of the process which afforded him great influence. During my time as Lt. Governor, Senator Holley always made his presence felt in the shaping of legislation. It was an honor to work with him for the people of Alabama. He was a true statesman and will be missed.”
Senator Holley, a native of Coffee County, dedicated his life to public service. He attended Troy State College and East Tennessee State University before returning home to Elba, where he served as a high school principal, owned the Elba Ford Tractor Company, and was a member of the Alabama National Guard. He later became a longtime administrator at Troy University.
Holley’s political career began in 1974 when he was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives. After five terms, he transitioned to the State Senate, serving six terms before retiring in 2022. His four decades in the legislature were marked by dedication to his constituents and significant contributions to state legislation.
Flags in the Capitol complex and in Coffee, Covington, Dale, and Pike counties will remain at half-staff until sundown on Friday, November 8, as the state honors the legacy of a dedicated public servant.
