The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) announced ongoing efforts to eradicate contraband within its correctional facilities through a comprehensive strategy that includes cooperation with local, state, and federal law enforcement.

As of November 6, 2024, the ADOC’s Law Enforcement Services Division has reported 133 arrests related to contraband, involving both civilians and correctional staff. These include 95 arrests of civilians and 38 of ADOC staff members. The ADOC has emphasized its commitment to identifying and addressing compromised individuals within its workforce to maintain the integrity and security of its facilities.

The ADOC’s contraband prevention measures also include legislative support. In collaboration with the Governor’s Office and Alabama legislators, the ADOC helped introduce anti-drone legislation, House Bill 345. This bill prohibits the operation of unmanned aircraft systems (drones) over ADOC facilities, specifically barring unauthorized surveillance or recording of facilities. Violations carry outlined penalties, including civil forfeiture procedures for drones and any associated contraband.

High-security areas, including death row, require heightened security measures due to ongoing interactions between inmates and civilians, staff, visitors, and volunteers through various channels such as mail, visitation, and meal service. This continuous contact highlights the need for vigilant oversight to ensure the safety of all individuals within ADOC facilities.

The ADOC reaffirms its commitment to protecting Alabama’s communities by mitigating contraband risks, with significant progress already made through enhanced detection, legislation, and increased internal scrutiny.
