The biggest of the Democratic big guns is now endorsing Shomari Figures in Alabama’s 2nd congressional district.

President Barack Obama on Friday officially endorsed Figures, who worked in Obama’s administration. The former president also recorded a robo-call for Figures, and those messages have started going out to District 2 voters.

“Alabama, you’ve led the way in securing voting and civil rights for everyone in America, making journeys like mine possible,” said Obama in the recording. “Today, America needs you to lead the charge for change once again. By sending Shomari Figures to Congress, you’ll have someone committed to improving economic and healthcare outcomes for everyone.

“I know this because Shomari served in my administration, helping implement policies to make life better for all Americans.”

Obama is the latest in a series of high-profile Democrats to officially endorse Figures and spend time campaigning for him. Earlier this week, along with Rep. Terri Sewell, former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, and Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett were in the state, encouraging voters to turn out for Figures. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also spoke at a Figures event in Montgomery on Thursday.

The presence of so many high-profile Dems speaks to the importance of Figures’ race in Alabama’s newly-drawn 2nd district. The margins for control of the House are razor thin, with many polls now giving Democrats a more likely chance and gaining a slim margin, thus booting Republican Mike Johnson – a devout Trump supporter who recently spoke openly of gutting the Affordable Care Act and potentially leaving millions of Americans without access to health care – and replacing him with Jeffries.

Democrats controlling the House also carries more importance with such a tight race for president. Should Donald Trump take control of the White House, a U.S. House controlled by Democrats would be able to block many of Trump’s plans, particularly the more heinous proposals outlined in the Project 2025 playbook.

The most recent polling in District 2 shows Figures with a strong lead, and it also showed that voters understood the historic significance of the race and the weight in carries in determining the future of the country.
