In response to the U.S. Department of Justice’s announcement on Tuesday regarding a plot to conduct a terrorist attack on Election Day, the Montgomery County Probate Court has taken proactive measures to safeguard the upcoming election and ensure voters’ safety. The Department of Justice charged 27-year-old Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, an Afghan national residing in Oklahoma City, with conspiring to provide material support to ISIS and plotting a violent attack targeting Election Day gatherings across the United States.
Although the specific threat has been neutralized with Tawhedi’s arrest, the Montgomery County Probate Court, in partnership with local law enforcement agencies, remains committed to protecting local polling places. Probate Judge J C Love emphasized the importance of a safe and secure election process, stating, “We are fully committed to protecting the democratic process and ensuring that the citizens of Montgomery County feel safe when they exercise their right to vote.” Sheriff Derrick Cunningham echoed these concerns, assuring the public that his team is prepared to maintain safety on Election Day.
Local authorities, including the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, will work closely with state and federal agencies, providing law enforcement presence at polling locations and real-time monitoring to prevent potential threats. The court’s actions reflect a nationwide effort to safeguard electoral integrity amidst growing concerns of election-related violence and foreign influence.
The charges against Tawhedi include his attempts to acquire AK-47 assault rifles and stockpiling ammunition in preparation for the attack. According to court documents, Tawhedi had planned to liquidate his family’s assets and send them abroad before executing the plot in the name of ISIS, a designated foreign terrorist organization.
