Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded just over $200,000 to the Alabama Department of Public Health for a campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving.
The campaign aims to reduce the number of children killed in distracted driving incidents by 10 percent. The Department of Public Health will work with schools and public agencies throughout the state to share information and conduct training sessions to reduce distracted driving.
“A loss of focus on the road can have devastating and deadly consequences,” Gov. Ivey said. “It is crucial to ensure current and future drivers understand how dangerous it is to drive distracted, and this program of the Department of Public Health will do just that.”
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“I join Gov. Ivey in commending this effort to reduce deaths caused by distracted driving,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “It is especially important to reach young people and teach them safe driving practices early.”
ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, victim programs, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation.
