The Business Council of Alabama and the Alabama Technology Network announced their 2024 Manufacturer of the Year award winners Friday during a luncheon at the Renaissance Hotel in Montgomery.

“Manufacturing is crucial to shaping Alabama’s economic landscape and future. It’s more than just producing Made-In-Alabama products; it’s about creating jobs, fostering innovation, and being one of the top economic drivers in our state,” said BCA President and CEO Helena Duncan. “The Manufacturer of the Year awards honor the exceptional spirit of our state’s manufacturers and their positive impact on their communities. We are thrilled to recognize such a distinguished group of businesses.”

The groups name a “manufacturer of the year” in three different size categories: small (99 or fewer employees), medium (100-399 employees), and large (400 or more employees). They also honor an “emerging manufacturer” that has been operating for 10 years or less.

“Alabama’s manufacturing sector continues to lead with cutting-edge solutions and sustainable practices. With a highly skilled workforce and a commitment to excellence, Alabama manufacturers not only support local communities but also play a critical role in shaping the future of our industry,” said Keith Phillips, Executive Director of ATN. “Their resilience, adaptability, and pursuit of growth ensure a prosperous future for the state’s economy. ATN is proud to partner with BCA in supporting and honoring these exceptional manufacturers at the 25th annual Manufacturer of the Year Awards.”

Celebrating over 20 years, the Manufacturer of the Year awards have become a hallmark event attended by Alabama dignitaries and distinguished leaders from the manufacturing sector. Tom Scroggins, partner at Burr & Forman, served as the event’s keynote speaker, speaking to industry leaders about creating a culture that values employees and prevents labor organization.

Scroggins gave the attendees five causes for organization, and he said wages and benefits is not really the top reason.

“Number one is respect; how does your frontline supervision treat workers,” Scroggins said. “Sometimes there is a culture of sexual or racial harassment or discrimination. Most drives are driven by this issue and it has to be addressed.”

Scroggins said communication between management and workers is the second largest cause of labor organization drives, with work-life balance as the third issue driving oranization.

Wages and benefits and training issues round out the top five reasons employees feel the need to organize, Scroggins said.

This year’s awards coincide with National Manufacturing Month, highlighting the significant contributions of manufacturers to Alabama, the United States, and the global economy. Gov. Kay Ivey declared October 4 as Manufacturing Day in Alabama to further acknowledge this vital sector.
