Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Alabama, called for more security detail for former president Donald Trump during a press conference Tuesday.

The conference was held in light of an apparent assassination attempt on Trump which occurred Sept. 15 while the former president was playing a round of golf at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Fla.

A Secret Service agent opened fire on the suspected gunman after he was spotted with a rifle hiding behind a tree line on the golf course. The suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, was taken into custody by police after fleeing the scene.

“You have to, and we have to give him more support—whether it’s rangers, whether it’s Navy SEALS, whether it’s more DHS, I don’t care,” Tuberville said. “We got 48 days. And if we have something disastrous happen in this time frame between now and the election, we know what could happen. We need to take care of this president.”

Tuberville claimed the attack was the result of “dangerous rhetoric” utilized by Trump’s opponents. The conference featured two tweets from Vice President Kamala Harris President Joe Biden, printed on poster board, both of which called Trump a “threat to democracy.”

“When you hear on TV and radio and on social media about ‘this guy is Hitler, this guy is a fascist, he’s a threat to democracy.’ What do you expect?” Tuberville said.

“Mentally ill people hear this violent, dangerous rhetoric, and we’re gonna have a copycat. It’s coming,” Tuberville said.

Tuberville highlighted some of the individuals he felt were responsible for disparaging the former president on social media and inspiring attempts on his life.

“You got people like Hillary Clinton, George Clooney, Joy Reid, Robert De Niro—wannabe politicians. It’s time for them to shut up because somebody is gonna get killed, other than the fireman that got killed already in Pennsylvania,” Tuberville said.

Tuberville claimed Trump’s Secret Service detail was not adequate security for the former president.

“One thing about President Trump, he’s different. He doesn’t work six to eight hours a day. He’s gonna work 14—16 hours a day. You’re not gonna stop him from going to outdoor events,” Tuberville said. “He’s also gonna do more than one event, sometimes two to three events a day, and you can’t do it with just a basic group of Secret Service.”

Tuberville called for Biden and Harris to help increase security around the former president saying, “If Joe Biden and Kamala Harris care anything about this country, they need to immediately grant President Trump as much as they possibly can—the security around he and his family.”
