Ten nonprofit organizations from across Alabama will be featured during the first-ever Nonprofit Film Festival on October 3, 2024. Hosted by the Alabama Association of Nonprofits (AAN), the Nonprofit Film Festival will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the BJCC’s Forum Building: 950 22nd Street North, 3rd Floor, Birmingham, AL 35203.
In the spring, AAN held a competitive grants process to select ten community-based nonprofits that have a compelling story and, while small or underfunded, are successful organizations. Eighty-three percent of Alabama’s nonprofits fall in the “small” category, and those selected have been working with Birmingham videographers Bold As A Lion Studios, Hamilton McAfee, and See It Productions to create a short film about their mission in action.
The featured nonprofits include the Aum Foundation, Birmingham Corps, Birmingham Education Foundation, College, Choice Foundation, GirlSpring, Khairi and Little Angels’ Memorial, South Baldwin Literacy Council, STREAM Innovations, The Flourish Alabama, and The Red Barn. AAN is rolling out the red carpet to spotlight the importance of these organizations in Alabama as well as their talent, impact, and leadership.
“Imagine our state without youth programs that provide mentors and build character, equity-centered workforce development, or literacy programs that lift children and adults out of the darkness. Without nonprofits, children and their families would lose real opportunities to thrive, holding our state back. It’s past time to showcase these stellar nonprofits and give them the applause they deserve,” said Danielle Dunbar, Executive Director of the Alabama Association on Nonprofits.
At the event, there will be a red-carpet photo booth, small bites with wine and beer, as well as a panel discussion about philanthropy. Before premiering the films, participants will hear from Tony Bowen, Executive Director of Fidelity Charitable® Catalyst Fund, Elaine Martyn, Senior VP of the Private Donor Group at Fidelity Charitable, Marsha Morgan with the Birmingham Change Fund, and a local donor. The panelists will provide tips and tricks to get gifts from donor advised funds (DAFs), share national and local trends in donor giving, and discuss giving circles, among other economic drivers for nonprofits.
The Alabama Association of Nonprofits is an advocate for the nonprofit community and intends for its film festival to be a fun way to acknowledge the critical missions of the selected nonprofits. Watching their upbeat and heartbreaking scenes while networking with elected officials, donors, and nonprofit and foundation leaders is a way for Alabamians to rally around social changemakers. When leaders begin to rally around an organization, the floodgates begin to open. “Ultimately, this festival is about you and me joining in their efforts, spreading the word about their work, and financially supporting these luminaries. All of the nonprofits showcased are Oscar winners in our eyes,” Dunbar said.
