Troy University will proudly host the U.S. premiere of the documentary short film “Beyond A War,” an event dedicated to honoring military veterans and celebrating the transformative power of reconciliation. The premiere will be held on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at 3 p.m. at the Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts in Montgomery, Alabama.

“Beyond A War,” produced by Duy Tan University in Vietnam, chronicles the compelling journey of Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor of Troy University, and Dr. Lê Công Cơ, President of Duy Tan University. Once adversaries during the Vietnam War, these two leaders have turned their past conflicts into a powerful educational partnership. The documentary highlights their personal experiences in combat and survival, ultimately showcasing their efforts to bridge cultures through education and collaboration.

Dr. Hawkins expressed his enthusiasm for the film, stating, “What excites me about ‘Beyond A War’ is that it shows the transformation of the relationships between two countries that a half century ago were at war. Today, not only do we recognize each other as countries, but we are working as partners. While we came from different backgrounds and certainly different sides of the war, our goal now is unity and a common focus on students.”

The event will begin with a performance by POPulus, Troy University’s popular music ensemble composed of students from the Music Industry Program. Following the performance, attendees will view the much-anticipated film premiere, accompanied by a Q&A session with the film’s director and Dr. Hawkins, moderated by Alabama Public Television anchor Todd Stacy.

Special guest speakers will include Jack McManus, President of the Vietnam Veterans of America, and Capt. Gary Michael Rose (USA – Ret.), a Medal of Honor Recipient. Veterans and their families are especially encouraged to attend, with all veterans in attendance receiving a special gift from Troy University.

This event is open to the public. For more information, to view the trailer, and to reserve your seat, please visit the official Beyond A War” website.
