Sen. Britt advances $3 million for water system in Union Springs

Britt secured $3 million for Union Springs to upgrade water infrastructure to benefit local facilities.

Alabama U.S. Senator Katie Britt, a Senate Committee on Appropriations member, has advanced $3 million in funding for the City of Union Springs through the Fiscal Year 2025 Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act.

These federal funds would be used to upgrade the city’s water systems, crucial for public health and local economic growth.

The Board of Utilities plans to execute two major infrastructure projects.

A new 500,000-gallon elevated water storage tank is needed to stabilize water pressure throughout the system.

Local critical care facilities rely on a steady and consistent water supply that comes with installing the new storage tank. Now, Spring Manor Assisted Living Facility, which provides long-term and hospice care, the Bullock County Hospital, and the Fresenius Kidney Dialysis Clinic, all of which are integral to community health services, will reap the benefits of this funding.

The Board of Utilities also plans to construct a new water supply production well to help with an increase in demand.

Wayne Sanderson Farms operates an 85,000-square-foot processing facility with 900 employees. Currently, the facility is the largest consumer of water within the city’s system, using over half of the water produced for the region. Wayne Sanderson Farms plans to expand operations and the increase in demand underscores the need for additional storage and supply in Union Springs.

The $3 million in funding would address both the expanding requirements of the facility and the critical needs of the community, ensuring that both are supported.

The FY25 Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act now awaits consideration by the full Senate.
