In Alabama and across several other Southern states, 17,000 Communications Workers of America (CWA) members who work for AT&T Southeast are on strike over unfair labor practices. Huntsville’s CWA Local 3905 has approximately 250 members on strike.

“During negotiations, management has refused to bargain in good faith with the dedicated workers who make their profits possible. The North Alabama Area Labor Council and labor unions around our region have these members’ backs and we are mobilizing to support them,” the release stated. “Our Labor Council has voted to approve a donation to help sustain the strikes in our community, UPS drivers represented by Teamsters Local 402 have pledged to not cross picket lines to make deliveries, and members from other labor unions are regularly showing up to support striking workers and make personal donations of food and drink. The labor movement’s biggest strength is our solidarity and union members in Alabama are ready to help our CWA siblings win this fight.”

Donnie Helums, a UPS employee and Teamsters Local 402 member who has walked the picket line and personally donated to support the CWA said this of why he supports striking workers: “It’s all about being union strong and sticking together!” Derrick Weddle, a federal employee and member of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 1858 who has done the same had this to say: “I don’t need a committee or motion to do the right thing the right way. This is the least I can do for my friends at CWA LOCAL 3905. Prayerfully ATT recognizes the value of its workforce. They need quality insurance, healthcare, vacation, respect and wages to perform their jobs.”

“I’m proud to see members of our affiliate unions supporting the striking CWA members so strongly,” said Jacob Morrison, President of the North Alabama Area Labor Council, AFL-CIO, “It’s time for AT&T to stop violating the law and give these 17,000 workers the contract they deserve.”

North Alabama’s unions encourage workers in the South to visit a picket line and show your support, sign and share CWA’s petition, and talk to your friends about supporting these workers.
