State Rep. Joe Lovvorn, R-Auburn, has been appointed by Gov. Kay Ivey to the 18-member board of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center and attended his first meeting of the panel in Huntsville on Wednesday.
Officially known by state statute as the “Alabama Space Science Exhibit Commission,” the board oversees operations of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center museum and its affiliates – Space Camp, Aviation Challenge, U.S. Cyber Camp, and Robotics Camp.
“Alabama built the rockets that carried men to the moon and continues to play an essential role in the space program today, so I look forward to helping share that story with the 650,000 visitors who tour the rocket center annually,” Lovvorn said. “Equally important is the work we do to inspire the next generation of engineers, astronauts, inventors, and explorers through Space Camp and all of the associated programs and experiences it offers.”
Lovvorn, a Space Camp alumnus, is currently serving his third term in the Alabama House and chairs the body’s influential Rules Committee, which determines the bills, resolutions, and measures that will be considered on the House floor each meeting day. He previously chaired the House Technology and Research Committee.
A retired battalion chief with the Auburn Fire Department, he currently operates the Two Men and a Truck moving company franchise in Auburn and Montgomery.
Lovvorn holds an undergraduate degree in agriculture and a masters degree in business from Auburn University.
He and his wife, Jenifer, attend Church of the Highlands Auburn Campus and are parents to two sons.
