New research from the recruiting and consulting firm Robert Half has revealed a shift in employee sentiment, with a growing number of workers choosing to stay in their current jobs. The survey, which examined job search intentions for the second half of 2024, found that only about 35 percent of workers plan to seek new employment, down from 49 percent during the same period last year. This trend, described by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) as the “Big Stay,” highlights a broader focus on stability in an uncertain global environment.

Among the top organizations retaining their workforce, the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) stands out. Featured in Forbes as one of the best employers in Alabama, the ADPH, led by Dr. Scott Harris and employing approximately 2,700 workers, has been recognized for its employee retention and workplace satisfaction, ranking third on *Forbes’* 2024 list of Best Employers by State. This achievement underscores the department’s commitment to its employees, even in the face of significant challenges in public health and administration.

“Over the last few months, employee retention has increased as workers have chosen stability in the face of global uncertainty,” says Becky Wallace, head of people at LearnUpon, a corporate learning platform. “The declining job market, dubbed the ‘Big Stay’ by the CIPD, is a huge win for HR leaders who have been working hard to retain staff following years of increased attrition.”

Retaining top talent, however, requires ongoing effort. Wallace emphasizes the importance of providing challenges and development opportunities to keep long-term employees engaged and productive. This perspective aligns with findings from a recent ADP Research report, which showed that less than 50% of workers believe their employer invests in the skills they need for advancement. Organizations like the ADPH, which ranked highly in employee satisfaction, appear to be meeting these challenges by fostering environments where workers feel valued and have opportunities for growth.

The recognition of ADPH as one of Alabama’s top employers, reflects the department’s success in creating a supportive and stable workplace, a critical factor in retaining skilled professionals. As public health remains a priority for Alabama, the strength of the ADPH workforce will continue to be essential in addressing the state’s health challenges and ensuring the well-being of its residents.
