Last week, Senator Katie Britt announced that $9 million had passed through the Senate Appropriations Committee to fund the restoration and upgrades of two Alabama federal courthouses. The proposed funding now awaits consideration from the full Senate.
Funding for the projects was included in the Fiscal Year 2025 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act, which is designed to sustain critical functions of local government, bolster small businesses and fund the functions of the IRS and Department of the Treasury.
It has allocated $5 million for the Dothan Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, which serves the Middle District of Alabama, and $4 million for the Hugo Black Courthouse in Birmingham, which serves the Northern District of Alabama
Both of these buildings require improvements to continue serving their communities.
Dothan Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse was constructed in 1911 and the Hugo Black Courthouse has stood for nearly 40 years. These improvements are necessary to ensure that these buildings stand for many years to come.
“Alabama’s courts are a pivotal part of our justice system and our constitutional system of checks and balances,” Senator Britt said in a statement on Friday. “Bringing $5 million home to Dothan’s Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse and $4 million home to the Hugo L. Black U.S. Courthouse will make a substantial difference in keeping these courthouses accessible to Alabamians. I am proud to have secured these key funds in the Senate Appropriations Committee’s bill.”
