Darryl Washington, the Director of Economic Development for the city of Montgomery, is set to leave his current position to become the Executive Director of the new Montgomery Main Street Initiative. Washington, who began working for the city in April 2022, will officially transition out of his role on July 31, 2024.
During his tenure, Washington has been instrumental in several key developments. His leadership played a crucial role in establishing the City of Montgomery’s Department of Economic Development, a pivotal addition to the city’s infrastructure. He launched initiatives to support small businesses, including AccessMontgomery, the Small Business One Stop Shop (SBOSS), and the Small Business Capital Access Loan Fund. Additionally, he created the “Reimagine Montgomery” investor tours, successfully introducing dozens of regional and national retailers and investors to Montgomery, thereby enhancing the city’s economic prospects. His efforts to revitalize downtown Montgomery culminated in the city achieving National Main Street Designated Community recognition.
Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed expressed his support and gratitude for Washington’s contributions. “Though Darryl Washington will no longer work for the city, I’m glad he will continue to work with the city as he and his Montgomery Main Street team work to revitalize downtown Montgomery. Director Darryl Washington has been a vital asset during his time with the city. I fully support him in this new role and I wish him the best of luck,” said Mayor Reed.
In his new role, Washington will lead and manage the implementation of several key recommendations outlined in the recently adopted Downtown Action Plan. He expressed enthusiasm for his upcoming responsibilities, stating, “I look forward to continuing to work with the amazing citizens and businesses in Montgomery to create a more vibrant and inclusive Downtown Montgomery.”
The Montgomery Main Street Initiative is a new public/private partnership focused on the revitalization and sustained growth of downtown Montgomery. Utilizing the Main Street Approach, the initiative aims to craft economic strategies to enhance existing businesses, cultivate a dedicated group of volunteers committed to improving the district, foster an inclusive atmosphere, and create year-round experiences for both residents and visitors.
As Washington steps into his new role, the city looks forward to continued progress and development under his leadership, ensuring that Montgomery’s downtown remains a vibrant and thriving hub for all.
