Following the presidential debate on June 27, Republicans and an increasing number of Democrats began to question President Joe Biden’s ability to serve another four years.
Yesterday, on the Fox News show “Sunday Morning Futures,” Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville expanded on his previous statements about Biden’s competency by saying that the deep state and Democratic politicians have been controlling the sitting president.
“It’s unfortunate for Joe Biden, he’s sick,” Tuberville said. “Nobody can help that. People do get old, they do get sick. But this is all about the Democrats’ power.”
As an example, Tuberville focused on Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer “[coming] out of the White House and [saying] things like ‘the president was very strong,’ ‘the president was very adamant.’”
“We’ve all known Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi and Obama’s been running the country along with [Secretary of State] Blinken and [National Security Advisor] Sullivan,” he said. “You can tell by Schumer’s actions, Pelosi’s actions, the first two years they were calling the shots.”
“Hopefully the people understand that they’ve had total control, not the president but Schumer and Pelosi and all the deep state,” the senator elaborated. “The deep state’s total control over this and hopefully we can get control of it and get the Democrats out of power and get Trump and all the Republicans running this country.”
Tuberville provided no evidence and President Biden’s refusal to end his candidacy despite the concerns of many in Democratic leadership would seem to disprove the theory. Pelosi was actually one of the first Democrats to lightly question Biden’s competency by suggesting both Biden and Trump might need to take mental acuity tests.
Tuberville continued: “They would bring Joe Biden to the Capitol, walk him around, hold his arm, hold his hands, lead him around, and kind of show him off. But they’re making all the decisions, there’s no doubt about that.”
Later on Sunday, Tuberville retweeted a conservative writer saying: “Every right wing conspiracy about this White House was true.”
In addition to the Biden White House, Senator Tuberville was asked to speak about one of his idée fixes: the Southern border.
Tuberville quickly pointed to “people coming from Africa and they’re ISIS.” He said that “they’re coming across, they’re coming straight to the Southern border of America and coming into our country.”
ICE did arrest eight individuals with potential ties to the terrorist group in June, but all eight were from Tajikistan. Tajikistan is in central Asia, not Africa.
More than a hundred people were also arrested by the Department of Homeland Security after being brought into the country by an ISIS-affiliated smuggling network, but they all came from central Asia, not Africa, as well.
When asked by Maria Bartiromo to confirm what he said, Tuberville responded: “Exactly, and they’re coming by the droves.”
“They’re not coming by five or ten or fifteen, they’re coming every day,” he continued. “Most of the people coming across are from Venezuela who at this time are having a revolution, but a high percentage of them are coming from Africa and they’re ISIS and there’s nothing we can do about it.”
Despite the nation’s poor economy, Venezuela is not, in fact, having a revolution. The current president, Nicolás Maduro, is an authoritarian who has suppressed political dissent but there is a national election scheduled for July 28. Venezuelans also only make up around 11 percent of all border crossings so far this year according to the CBP.
Tuberville then accused “the NGOs down there” of helping ISIS members cross the border and mentioned a “7,000 percent increase in people coming from China across our Southern border.”
While it’s unclear what timeframe Tuberville was referring to, the number of Chinese nationals entering America has definitely increased significantly in recent years. Nationwide, there were just over 23,000 CBP encounters of Chinese citizens in 2021 and there have been almost 56,000 so far this year.
Many of these Chinese migrants have told reporters they left China due to a desire for political freedom with some specifically citing religious repression.
Sunday’s interview is neither the first time that Tuberville has spread conspiracy theories about the Biden White House nor the first time he has used questionable claims to argue for more restrictions on immigration.
