Today, January 23rd at 1 p.m. CST, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, AL-07, will host a press conference announcing a major $1 million Department of Justice (DOJ) grant that she helped secure for the Birmingham Board of Education to combat and prevent school violence in Birmingham City Schools. This funding is part of a $86.9 million investment from the DOJs Bureau of Justice Assistance STOP School Violence Grant Program to reduce violent crime in and around K-12 schools.

Rep. Sewell will then join Southern Research President and CEO Josh Carpenter, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) President Ray Watts, and other elected officials and business leaders for the ribbon-cutting of the Station 41 Biotech Incubator. The incubator will offer lab and office space for biotechnology startup companies. The opening of this facility is the latest in the ongoing effort to cement Birmingham as a center for innovation after the City was designated a Federal Tech Hub by the Biden-Harris Administration in October 2023.
