The Alabama Grocers Association (AGA) bestowed the esteemed Spirit of Alabama Award upon Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth for his dedication to the state’s grocery industry, particularly his efforts to reduce the grocery tax. The award presentation was part of the annual Alabama Food Industry Finest Luncheon, held on Thursday, October 26, at The Club, where over 120 industry members gathered.
Ellie Taylor, President and CEO of the AGA, alongside Bob Crawford, AGA Board Chairman and President of United-Johnson Brothers, honored Ainsworth for his accomplishments during the 2023 Legislative Session and his advocacy for the future.
“AGA applauds Lieutenant Governor Ainsworth for his work in the legislature, particularly the reduction of the grocery tax,” Taylor said. “Ainsworth met with countless experts, advisors, and associations, including the AGA, to rally support and help with this effort. To get 35 Senators and 100 out of 105 Representatives to support a cause is no small feat. AGA has been working for well over a decade to accomplish this reduction, and we are proud to present Lieutenant Governor Ainsworth with this award.”
The Spirit of Alabama Award reflects Ainsworth’s service and actions to repeal the state’s sales tax on groceries, an endeavor that underscores his commitment to the economic well-being of Alabamians.
Accepting the award, Ainsworth shared the credit with his colleagues, stating, “The Spirit of Alabama Award is a high honor, but it is one that I share with each legislator who sponsored and supported the bill and all who worked to repeal the grocery tax before me.” He continued, “We must finish the job of eliminating the state grocery tax altogether, but with Alabama’s historically strong economy and record low unemployment, I am confident that full relief from food taxation is on the horizon.”
AGA recognizes Ainsworth’s fervor and dedication to service. “Lieutenant Governor Ainsworth exemplifies the zeal, the concern, and the commitment that make the state of Alabama and our country great. AGA is honored to present him this award,” Taylor remarked.
The Alabama Grocers Association: Representing over 850 retail members and more than 200 suppliers, the AGA is the primary advocate for the grocery industry in Alabama, contributing significantly to the state’s economy and workforce.
