A correctional officer with the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) was stabbed Tuesday by an incarcerated individual at Staton Correctional Facility.

The incident occurred early in the morning when the officer, identified as C. Williams by sources, entered the incarcerated individual, Okiemute Omate’s, dorm. According to sources, Williams was trying to take a cellphone from Omate which caused Omate to pull a knife on Williams. Williams began to back up and mace Omate; however, the officer tripped, which allowed Omate to jump on him and stab him four times.

Williams was able to escape as assistance came but was flown out of the facility to have his wounds treated. Sources said that Omate appeared to be on “ice” or crystal methamphetamines. Omate also stabbed an incarcerated individual the day before stabbing Williams but was placed back into general population instead of being separated a source told APR.

However, according to a statement from ADOC, they claim that Williams went into the dorm because he noticed Omate had a weapon, not to get a cellphone.

“On October 3, 2023, an inmate-on-staff assault was reported at Staton Correctional Facility,” ADOC said in a statement. “A correctional officer observed inmate Okiemute Omatie entering his dorm with a weapon. The officer called for assistance and ordered Omatie to drop the weapon. Omatie refused the order and was administered a chemical spray. Omatie then attacked the officer. Assistance arrived as the officer was exiting the dorm. He was escorted to the Health Care Unit for assessment. He was then transported to an area hospital for treatment.”

In the statement ADOC does not specify the weapon nor that Williams was stabbed just that he was attacked. The statement also said that the ADOC Law Enforcement Services Division was investigating the incident.

According to ADOC’s website Omate is currently at the Kilby Receiving and Classification Center likely awaiting new charges related to the attack on Williams. Sources said that incarcerated people saw Williams as one of the “good ones” but Williams is expected to be okay.
