The Birmingham Association of REALTORS® (BAR), is embarking on a monumental tour to mark the 55th Anniversary of signing of the Fair Housing Act.

To celebrate this anniversary BAR will be asking all municipalities and counties to proclaim April as Fair Housing Month, with a goal of having 55 proclamations in hand.

“REALTORS® and consumers depend on strong fair housing laws and practices in the community. Housing discrimination has no place in Alabama or anywhere. The Fair Housing Act was designed to root out unfair practices that close the door on the American Dream for qualified buyers,” said 2023 BAR President Senator Keith Kelley.2023 BAR Diversity and Fair Housing Chairwoman Mechelle Wilder added, “the goal of 55 entities making this proclamation is a symbolic nod to the 55 years that we have been governed by the Fair Housing Act. I believe it should be at the forefront of all elected officials’ minds, at every level of government, to ensure that our citizens have equal access to clean, safe and affordable housing.”

“In 1968, in the wake of the assassination of Dr. King the passage of this landmark Act was a huge step in the right direction. Over the years, the Act has been amended to address additional issues, which is just a testament to how far we have come as a Nation, but still have a long journey ahead,” said 2023 BAR Diversity and Fair Housing Vice Chair Scott Ford.

The Birmingham Association of REALTORS® (BAR) is the premier resource for real estate information and education in Birmingham and Central Alabama, serving as the “Voice of Real Estate” since 1911, issuing statistical analysis of market conditions, offering legislative support to its more than 5,000 members and the industry at large.
