U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, AL-07, yesterday, announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation is awarding $1,053,163 to the City of Tuscaloosa to support the reconstruction and expansion of Tuscaloosa National Airport terminals. Funding for this grant was made available by the American Rescue Plan, which Rep. Sewell was the only member of the Alabama Congressional Delegation to support.

“As the only member of the Alabama Delegation to vote in favor of the American Rescue Plan, I am thrilled to see our cities and towns benefiting from such critical investments,” said Rep. Sewell. “I applaud the Department of Transportation for its investment in our infrastructure and continued partnership across all levels of government. With this grant, we’re making important improvements to the Tuscaloosa National Airport and moving Tuscaloosa’s economy forward!”

This grant will support the reconstruction of the Tuscaloosa National Airport’s 600’ x 300’ terminal apron pavement and connecting Taxiways A2 and G, along with an adjacent apron pavement area serving the airport’s aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) facility.

Specifically, the funding will support the following:

  • The reconstruction of 28,000 square yards of existing pavement
  • The resurfacing of 2,700 square yards
  • Associated pavement edge lighting and pavement markings, including approximately
    • 4,080 cubic yards of cement concrete pavement (CCP) material
    • Nearly 8,500 tons of asphalt mix pavement (AMP) materials
    • Approximately 600 tons of cement to be utilized for subgrade and base stabilization.

“The City of Tuscaloosa is honored to be awarded a discretionary grant from the U. S. Department of Transportation,“ said Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox. “Our airport plays a significant role in our community’s economy and the improvements afforded by this grant allocation will help accelerate our growth now and into the future.”
