Online job ads in October up 52 percent from last year

Registered nurses and retail salespersons top jobs in October based on help wanted online data.

Data collected and analyzed by the Alabama Department of Labor’s Labor Market Information Division shows that as of October 2021, the yearly comparison of online job ads is 94,391, up 52 percent from October 2020. The monthly total of online job ads for October 2021 is up 3.9 percent with 30,144 new online ads.

The five occupations with the most online job ads continue to be for registered nurses, retail salespersons, customer service representatives, sales representatives and truck drivers, with 14,987 ads placed for those occupations in October.

The HWOL data is compiled from all online job postings in the state, including those posted on the state’s free online jobs database, AlabamaWorks.alabama.gov, and other sources, such as traditional job boards, corporate boards, and social media sites.

Sixteen percent of job ads have salaries of $75,000 and above; 14 percent have salaries in the $50-75,000 range; 20 percent have salaries in the $35-49,000 range; and 50 percent have salaries of $35,000 or under.

The employer posting the most online ads in October was UAB Health System with 1,730. The rest of the top 10 were: Walmart / Sam’s (705), Lowe’s (704), University of South Alabama (653), Auburn University (585), St. Vincent Health System (579), Baptist Health (578), University of Alabama at Birmingham (553), Encompass Health (545), and Huntsville Hospital (540).

Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters are the focus of this month’s in-depth analysis by the LMI division. The median annual salary is advertised as $47,175 with 25 percent earning more than $53,907. In the last 12 months, there were 383 online ads for this occupation.

Plumbers, Pipefitters and Steamfitters assemble, install, alter, and repair pipelines or pipe systems that carry water, steam, air or other liquids or gases. This occupation typically requires vocational training or one to two years of training involving both on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers. Recognized apprenticeship programs may be associated with these occupations.
