The Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles held 41 parole hearings Tuesday, granting five paroles and denying 36. Two parole hearings were continued to a later date. The board also held 15 hearings on requests for pardons.
The list below contains the names of the inmates considered for parole Tuesday, Jan. 5, along with their race, gender, county or counties of conviction, crimes and the parole board’s decision.
- Clarence Anderson, inmate 142559, Black male serving a life sentence for a murder in Montgomery County. This was his third felony conviction. Parole denied.
- Eric Arrington, inmate 176263, Black males serving a life sentence for first degree sodomy and sexual abuse in Montgomery County. Parole denied.
- Joy Unique Barnes, inmate 241520, Black female has had 10 different convictions between 2005 and 2019 currently serving 8 years for credit card fraud and criminal possession of a forged instrument in Calhoun County. Previously paroled but reoffended (theft of property class III). Parole granted.
- James Walter Bell, inmate 242547, Black male serving a 20 year sentence for robbery I in Etowah County. He has served 14 years and 2 months. . Parole denied.
- Dustin Kyle Blevins, inmate 269339, White male. 5 different convictions between 2009 and 2020 for burglary, theft of property, and criminal possession of a forged instrument in Madison, Walker, Jefferson, and Cullman Counties. He has previously had parole revoked after reoffending. Parole granted.
- Norman Charles Box, inmate 149002, White male serving a life sentence. 11 different convictions between 1987 and 2009 for a diverse range of offenses including: Criminal mischief I, burglary, theft, receiving stolen property, and escape in Etowah, Calhoun, and St. Clair counties. Parole denied.
- Jimmy Lewayne Brooks, inmate 108554, Black male. Sentenced to 25 years for murder in 1983 in Chambers County. Sentenced to an additional 16 years for other offenses in 1995. He is 66 years old. Parole denied.
- Andrew Glenn Burkhalter, inmate 291014, White male. Convicted of a dozen different offenses in Talladega, Tallapoosa, and Shelby Counties between 2013 and 2019 including: burglary, theft of property, breaking into a vehicle, violating the terms of the sex offender registry law, and possession of a controlled substance. Parole denied.
- Keithen Antonio Caldwell, inmate 243963, Black male serving a life sentence in 2017 for murder in Jefferson County. He has a previous 2005 conviction for attempted murder. Parole denied.
- Andrew Charles Chambers, inmate 322528, White male sentenced in January for theft of property II and burglary III in Walker County. Parole denied.
- Antwon Cooper, inmate 298526, Black male. Has served 7 and a half years of a 20 year sentence for four counts of burglary, robbery, and theft in Walker County. Parole denied.
- Raymond Craig, inmate 143555, Black male. Has six different theft of property convictions between 1986 and 2019 in Dallas, Butler, and Elmore Counties. Parole denied.
- Alonza Cavelle Dixon, inmate 268697, Black male. He has two convictions for assault in Baldwin County in 2016. He has a 2009 conviction for robbery in Elmore County. Parole denied.
- Quintin Jacques Doss, inmate 285255, Black male. He has five convictions between 2012 and August of 2020 for offenses including: theft of property, unlawful breaking into and entering a vehicle, receiving stolen property, possession of a controlled substance, and marijuana possession in Lawrence and Colbert Counties. Parole denied.
- Barrent L Dozier, inmate 214166, Black male. Has five convictions between 2000 and 2017 for robbery, distribution of a controlled substance, felon in possession of a firearm, and marijuana possession all in Chambers County. Parole denied.
- Zandius Kentel Fagin, inmate 314056, Black male. Convicted of five counts of unlawfully breaking and entering into vehicles in Mobile County in 2019 and 2020. Parole granted.

- Harold Wesley Franklin, inmate 198172, Black male. Seven convictions in Montgomery County between 1998 and 2014 for burglary, theft of property, possession of a controlled substance, and two separate escape convictions. Parole denied.
- Melvin Dwight Franklin, inmate 212958, a 21 years old Black male. He was sentenced in May of 2019 for 11 different offenses in Mobile County including: burglary, theft of property, receiving stolen goods, and intimidating a witness. Parole denied.
- James Matthew Gazzier, inmate 230392, White male. Has five convictions between 2003 and 2008 for charges including: burglary, assault, and manslaughter in Mobile County. Parole hearing was continued.
- Barry Lee Hall, inmate 266965, White male, Has three convictions for robbery and possession of a controlled substance in Madison and Lauderdale County between 2009 and 2013. Parole denied.
- Rodney James Hood, inmate 221624, Black male. Convicted of manslaughter in Cherokee County. Parole denied.
- Eric Lee Hunt, inmate 323252, Black male. Sentenced for possession of a controlled substance in March in Russell County. Parole was granted.
- Jason Isbell, inmate 303063, 24 years old White male. Has five convictions between 2017 and 2020 for burglary, possession of a controlled substance, including two counts of escape in St. Clair County. Parole denied.
- Miles Clinton Ivey, inmate 174963, White male. Was convicted of approximately 40 counts of theft of property, unlawful breaking into and entering a vehicle, and criminal possession of a forged instrument in 1993. Reoffended in 2003 and 2012 for five more counts for burglary, theft, and criminal possession of a forged instrument in Etowah County. Parole denied.

- Calvin Young, inmate 273421. Black male. Parole denied. Has three convictions for robbery in 2010 in Mobile. Parole denied.
The Alabama Department of Corrections currently has 24,861 inmates in its system (some of those are in county jails waiting for ADOC to pick transport them to prison).
The largest demographic in the state prison system are Black men, who comprise over half of the total number of Alabama prisoners with 12,654. They are followed by white men at 9,894, white women at 1,570, Black women at 543, other men at 194, and other women at 6.
There are currently 22,742 men and 2,119 women incarcerated in Alabama Department of Corrections facilities. Tens of thousands more are currently on parole or probation.
The board also held 15 hearings on requests for pardons. Providing adequate housing for the state’s prison population as well as adequate health care, security, mental health and drug treatment for incarcerated Alabamians has been identified as the most pressing need for the Alabama state government.
