A physician in UAB’s Division of Infectious Disease, one of the groups leading the state’s response to the novel coronavirus outbreak, has tested positive for the virus.
Dr. Mike Saag, a physician in the division, tested positive, UAB’s president said in a statement to the UAB community Tuesday evening.
“He wishes to make his case known as an example of the COVID-19 reality and the importance of practicing aggressive social distancing,” President Ray L. Watts said in the letter. “As Dr. Saag will share, he was exposed on a family visit to New York City.”
Saag and UAB are taking precautionary measures to “promote a safe environment.”
“We will diligently work with health department officials to identify and notify anyone who may have been exposed,” Watts said.
UAB advised people to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and UAB guidance to protect themselves and others, including social distancing and good hygiene.
If you have symptoms, call your health care provider before going to the doctor, and if you feel sick stay home.
“UAB is fully prepared to safely isolate and care for patients with infectious diseases, and we have taken aggressive action to slow the spread of coronavirus,” Watts said. “Please take care of yourself and each other.”
