The Alabama Democrats opened candidate qualifying Monday for the 2018 primary election.
Democrats began qualifying yesterday for the June 5, 2018, Democratic primary, and potential candidates will have until Feb. 9, 2018, to qualify with the party. Candidates have been preparing for the primaries for months by fundraising and campaigning across the state.
Democratic Party Chairwoman Nancy Worley said Monday that a “slate of impressive candidates” had already qualified. For the state top’s office, Sue Bell Cobb, former Alabama chief justice, qualified Monday to run in the Democratic primary for governor. Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox is expected to be her chief opponent in the primary.
Maddox told the Alabama Political Reporter he will qualify later this month. We were unable to confirm if any other announced candidates including James Fields of Hanceville or Anthony White of Dothan qualified. Worley did not respond to requests for comment Monday, though she issued a press release Monday morning.
“We are pleased to see so many strong candidates turn in their qualifying papers today; numerous others called to say they mailed their qualifying papers or plan to bring them to the office this week,” Worley said.
On top of the gubernatorial election, candidates began qualifying yesterday for all federal, state and county offices and the State Democratic Executive Committee.
For interested candidates, information about qualifying procedures is available on the Alabama Democratic Party website, aldemocrats.org.
