The Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants endorsed Alabama Supreme Court Associate Justice Will Sellers ahead of the 2018 Republican primary.
“I’m overwhelmed with the endorsement from the Alabama Society of CPAs,” Sellers said. “Accountants know first-hand of the need for a stable legal and regulatory environment for business to prosper and expand. I’m honored by their endorsement and gratified by the support of so many of their members.”
The ASCPA currently represents over 6,500 members statewide. The organization is dedicated to building successful networks and advocating on behalf of its current professionals, as well as training future leaders in the accounting field.
Sellers was appointed to the Court by Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey.
“I am grateful to Governor Kay Ivey for appointing me to the Alabama Supreme Court,” Sellers said. “I intend to qualify to run in the June 2018 Republican primary.”
“Since my appointment, I have received an outpouring of support from my fellow lawyers and business leaders throughout Alabama,” Sellers said. “I thoroughly enjoy my work on the Court, and it is a privilege to serve alongside Chief Justice Lyn Stuart and the other associate justices. I know our work makes a big difference to the people of Alabama, who recognize the need for a strong judicial branch of government.”
Sellers is an alumnus of Hillsdale College. He received his law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law. Sellers earned a Masters’ degree in law and letters in taxation from New York University.
Sellers spent 28 years working at a private law practice in Montgomery.
Sellers is a member of the Alabama State Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar Association and has been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Tax Court and the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.
Sellers is involved in many civic and community organizations in the Montgomery area, including the United Way, the Business Committee for the Arts and the YMCA. He has been elected to the Electoral College in each of the last four presidential cycles.
Sellers previously served as a partner in the Montgomery office of Balch & Bingham, LLP. A major part of Sellers’ practice has involved litigation against the Internal Revenue Service and the Alabama Department of Revenue.
Sellers chaired Ivey’s 2010 and 2014 campaigns for lieutenant governor. Sellers formerly was counsel for the House GOP Caucus. He has held a number of positions in the Alabama Republican Party.
Former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore was suspended for the remainder of his term by the Court of the Judiciary. When a special appointed acting Supreme Court denied his appeal, Moore retired from the Court to pursue the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions, after Sessions was confirmed as U.S. attorney general. Ivey then appointed Associate Justice Lyn Stuart to fill Moore’s chief justice position – Stuart had been functioning as acting chief justice for about a year. Ivey then appointed Sellers to fill Stuart’s vacant associate justice seat.
In addition to the support of the ASCPA, Sellers has received endorsements from the Business Council of Alabama’s Progress PAC, the Alabama Foresty Association’s FOREST PAC and the Alabama Civil Justice Reform Committee.
Will is married to the former Lee Grant, and they have three adult children. They are active members of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Montgomery.
The major party primaries are on June 5, 2018. Major party qualifying opens on Jan. 9, 2018.
