Monday, August 28, 2017, State Senator Jim McClendon, R-Springville, announced that he will seek a second term in the Alabama Senate. McClendon was elected to the seat in 2014.
Sen, McClendon represents Senate District 11, which covers portions of Shelby, St. Clair and Talladega counties.
McClendon said in a statement, “I’ll support legislation that helps small businesses grow and create good-paying jobs.”
McClendon added, “I want to focus on making the lives of hardworking Alabama families better, and I’ll continue my efforts to fight for the conservative values we all share.”
Senator McClendon chairs the powerful Senate Health Committee and is a member of the Committee on Rules and the Finance and Taxation Education Committee which control’s the State’s budget for k-12, postsecondary and higher education.
McClendon, a retired eye doctor in the Leeds and Moody communities, is a decorated Vietnam veteran. McClendon is married to the former El Tate of Arab, Alabama. They are members of the First United Methodist Church of Springville.
McClendon previously served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 2002 to 2014 representing House District 50. There he chaired the House Health Committee and the Joint Committee on Reapportionment.
The Alabama Political Reporter has talked with a candidate who claims that he will formally announce soon that he will be challenging McClendon in the Senate District 11 Republican Primary.
In 2014, McClendon defeated Sen. Jerry Fielding, R-Sylacauga, in the Republican Primary and then defeated marijuana legalization activist and Democratic candidate Ron Crumpton in the General Election, both by large margins.
The Republican primary election is June 5, 2018.
