Roby Introduces Legislation to Make Use of Unsecured Private Servers Illegal

Monday, November 7, 2016, US Representative Martha Roby (R-Montgomery) announced in an email newsletter to voters that she has introduced legislation that would make it a felony to be careless with national security information.

FBI Director James Comey has twice cleared Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for any criminal wrongdoing while she was Secretary of State. Whether or not the irregular practice of having a private email server maintained by people without national security clearance in her home to handle classified and top secret emails from the State Department was already illegal or not has been hotly debated.

Congresswoman Roby said, “Generally speaking, I want federal prosecutors to take violations of our national security laws and protocols more seriously, no matter who commits them. That’s why more than a month ago, in the wake of the FBI’s Clinton decision, I introduced legislation that would strengthen those laws and protocols for the storing and transfer of classified information

Rep. Roby said that, “HR6219 The Unsecured Server Act of 2016 makes it a felony to knowingly store classified information on an unsecured server or send or receive classified information from an unsecured server, subject to a fine and up to ten years in prison. My bill also ensures that individuals found to have improperly stored or sent classified information in the last ten years are disqualified from receiving security clearances.”

Roby said, “The time has come to update our legal code for the information age and to make it clear that the “extremely careless” behavior Clinton and her aides engaged in is not tolerated going forward. The Unsecured Server Act of 2016 has been referred to the Judiciary Committee’s Crime Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations Subcommittee. I will keep you updated on the bill’s progress.”

Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump has said that Hillary Clinton is being protected by a corrupt system. Trump shocked the country when he told Hillary in the second debate that if he is elected she will go to jail.
