Tea Party Conservatives had a rare win over their GOP establishment rivals last year when economics professor Dave Brat, successfully unseated House Majority Leader, Eric Cantor in Virginia.
It was widely believed that Cantor is going to be the next Speaker of the House, when John Boehner (R-Ohio) eventually steps down. Brat was outspent $5 million to $100,000.
Brat won with 55.8 percent of the vote to Cantor’s 44.2 percent. Congressman Cantor became the first person in American history to lose his party’s primary while holding the powerful position of House majority leader, according to Roll Call the Capitol Hill newspaper. Brat challenged Cantor on the immigration issue. Cantor was widely viewed as a moderate on immigration. Brat accused Cantor of supporting President Barack Obama’s (D) controversial immigration reform bill. Rep. Cantor was expected to carry some version of immigration reform once Republican Primary season was over. Cantor’s shocking fall effectively killed immigration reform legislation in the last Congress.
The Tuscaloosa County Young Republicans announced that they are pleased to be hosting Congressman Dave Brat of Virginia, on September 5th, 2015, for it’s “Legislator of the Year” meeting.
