Agenda Released For ALSDE Meetings

By Beth Clayton

MONTGOMERY–The Alabama State Department of Education Executive Board will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the Gordon Persons Building. The Executive Board’s work session will immediately follow the board meeting.

The first item on the agenda for the Executive Board meeting will be the election of the Vice President and President Pro Tem of the ALSDE Executive Board. Currently, Ella Bell (D-Montgomery) is President Pro Tem and Stephanie Bell is the Vice President.

The Executive Board meeting will also include a large number of proposed changes to the Alabama Administrative Code, regarding issues such as flexibility for students in failing schools, annual apportionment of the Foundation Program funds and private school licensure.

In the work session, Assistant State Superintendent of Education Dr. Melinda Maddox and Shanthia Washington will present the Plan 2020 New Accountability Model Overview.

Plan 2020 is a program developed by ALSDE to ensure that “all students perform at or above proficiency and show continuous improvement, all students succeed, every student graduates from
high school and every student graduates high school prepared” for college or a career.

Recently, the Alabama Department of Revenue ruled that the Accountability Act does not apply to students who are already enrolled in failing schools.

During the last ALSDE Executive Board meeting, State Superintendent Dr. Tommy Bice released the list of failing schools, which has caused school boards across the state to reevaluate their plans heading into 2014.

Plan 2020 will now have to work in conjunction with the Accountability Act to ensure that students enrolled in public schools are able to be accommodated and that schools deemed “failing” can continue to make progress.

The work session will also address other changes that the Executive Board would like to make to the Alabama Administrative Code.
